But I'm interested I exactly how we can calculate the correct dosage??!! Because this applies to ALL supplements....

Carol, this is such a good question.

For collagen specifically, the evidence is not yet precise enough to calculate a personalized “perfect dose.” Most human trials used 5–15 grams daily of hydrolyzed collagen peptides, usually for at least 8–12 weeks. So that is the practical evidence-based range.

For supplements in general, I think about dose in four steps: what dose was used in human trials, what outcome was measured, how long it took to work, and where the safety ceiling is. More is not always better, and with some supplements, more can be harmful. You have a more in depth with the most common supplements here:

I used to get asked this question a lot when I had weight loss/nutritional therapy/ ADHD clients. So I started using kinesiology or the sway test - and clients loved that because they felt in control, a BIG issue for those with eating disorders! Plus, it introduced them to reconnecting with their body...

But your parameters add more depth!

This is a careful breakdown, and splitting what the evidence supports from what it doesn't is the part most collagen coverage skips entirely.

The limitation you raised at the end is the one I'd lean on hardest: an umbrella review inherits the weaknesses of its inputs, and you note many of the original trials were short, company-funded, and used different outcome tools. So "high-certainty" here is doing two jobs, consistency of effect across trials, and quality of those trials, which aren't the same thing. The skin-elasticity signal holding up despite that heterogeneity is arguably the more convincing part.

Thank you, Dr. Efevretis. I agree that the key is to avoid both extremes: dismissing collagen as “just protein,” while also resisting the marketing claim that it is a universal anti-aging solution. The best evidence supports modest, specific benefits when hydrolyzed collagen is taken consistently alongside the fundamentals that determine collagen health in the first place: sun protection, adequate total protein, vitamin C, exercise, sleep, and not smoking.

I use this in conjunction with heavy weight lifting and whole food nutrition.

Thank you Zuzu. Heavy resistance training and whole-food nutrition are the foundations for osteopenia. Collagen can be a reasonable addition, but I would view it as supportive, not a substitute for adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D, and regular DEXA follow-up.

The peptide signaling piece is especially important. It helps explain why collagen peptides may do more than simply provide amino acids, while still keeping expectations realistic. And yes, the biological environment matters enormously: vitamin C, mechanical loading, sleep, hormones, inflammation, and metabolic health all shape whether the body can actually build and maintain collagen. A supplement can support the system, but it cannot replace it.

I've been taking it for a couple of years and my anecdotal conclusions: yes, it helps alleviate arthritis pain, and it definitely speeds up and strengthens nail growth. I imagine it has a similar affect on hair, but I can't say for sure.
